The sudden death of the young Shunzhi Emperor (Sunny Chan) shocked the whole kingdom. The second prince, Fuquan (Kenneth Ma), was originally the successor for the throne, but Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang (Ching) changed the successor to the third prince, Xuanye, who subsequently becomes the Kangxi Emperor (Chan). Angry with this, Fuquan dispatchs a spy, Nip Dor-po (Steven Ma), and instructs him to gain Kangxi's trust.
顺治十八年，顺治帝(陈锦鸿饰)看破红尘削髮为僧，属意将帝位传给二哥福全(马国明饰)，但孝庄太后(程可为饰)认为福全心术不正，以假传遗诏，令三哥玄 烨(陈国邦饰)为康熙皇帝。顺治得之此事，写下密函，其中一半密函落在当时年幼祈俊杰(马浚伟饰)之父祈万昌(骆应钧饰)手上。万昌因此被人追杀，匆忙间 将俊杰放在将淹至的桥底上，可惜最后俊杰失踪及被紫凝(李诗韵饰)之父反清义士树棠(张国强饰)收养。
此剧讲述福全利用忠心祈俊杰及其贵妃曼筠(姚子羚饰)之父兵力，一步步经营获回他的江山。俊杰因被康熙及福全的提携当上侍卫，与二人建立平辈论交。当他知道其身世及得知杀害他一家的仇人，他陷入进退两难的局面。
